:Late 19th/early 20th Century American Illustrator William Smedley's illustration, A Late Arrival (Ladies on a Porch), was described in a late-19th century edition of The New York Times as, "a scene from the Summer boarding house with a bashful youth running the gantlet [sic.] of a dozen critical pairs of eyes as he walks down the piazza."
