CIRCUS ACT TO PREPARE FOR HOP GROWING.
MW/G24
Fred Dalling (23) is not rehearsing for a circus act but he is working on stilts to prepare for hop growing at Dormington Court Farm, Herefordshire. He works 11 feet above the ground on stilts and although it is only a once a year job he performs with the agility of a circus expert. It is only in recent years that stilts have taken the place of ladders in Herefordshire. It takes the quarter the time it would with ladders, says Mr Dalling. Hop growing is big business in Herefordshire and planting takes place very shortly for picking in September. The better the crop the better the beer.

Although Fred only performs on stilts once a year he displays the dexterity of a circus act. He says it takes him only a quarter of the time it would with ladders.
