2389) THE LOST GOLD MINE OF YARROW FOUND. The Ancient workers closed down their Gold mine and thouroughly camouflaged the workings until every particle of Quartz was hidden. Huge stones were erected to mark the place and a chart would probably be made. Centuries have passed and now it has been rediscovered by Mr. John Hicol of Glen Cafe, St. Marys Loch, Yarrow. In 1933 an article by a German about mining appeared in a Canadian paper remarking about the lost Gold mine of Yarrow. Was this mine worked by foreigners in lone ages past and information handed down through the generations. The Gold is both Alluvial and native (ie, in the Sand of the streams as well as in Reefs). Back tracking was first noticed in the HENDERLAND BURN (Backtracking for alluvial mining) as well as the COM SIKE but particularly in the MILEHOPEBURN where extensive sluicing had been carried out at two distinct periods. The Gold is not free in the Rock area, it is combined with other Reef Ores including Maganese, Copper, Gold and Silver. Preliminary samples drawn from decomposed back of Reef Assays showed 2.4. Dwts of Gold per ton of 2240lbs or 58 grains to the Ton as well as 0.36 ozs of silver and also included Manganese and Copper. St Mary's Loch is a very well known and beautiful loch and a great many visitors are to be found there in peace time. The situation is between Selkirk and Moffat.
