Are we admiring the abandoned and dejected Greek poet Sappho, or a Neapolitan commoner who adorns herself with oriental style to escape her miserable condition? The title of this painting plays upon the ambiguity of the expression “poor.” It also reflects the narrative approach of the Neo- Pompeian school, inspired by frescoes from Pompei and scenes of everyday life in ancient Rome, that was in fashion during the 19th century. Busciolano’s work greatly pleased his contemporaries, and this painting was acquired for Capodimonte shortly after being exhibited at the Neapolitan Exhibition of 1876.
