This photo shows one of the temporary canteens set up on Underground platforms to provide refreshments to shelterers. This example is at St Johns Wood station. To the right of the shot are bunk beds that shelterers used to sleep on. The picture was taken just before Christmas in 1944. The canteen is decorated with bells and garlands. Hung at the front there is also a Union Jack flag, on either side a pennant with the monogram of King George VI. The man and woman posing for the camera are not in London Transport uniform, so may be volunteers.
