This picture is a version of one in the British Royal collection which hangs at Osbourne House (titled The end of the day). Mason spent a long period in Italy 1845–58 before settling in his native Staffordshire. His later landscapes, such as this, interpret the life of the British countryside in a mode which is essentially classical. A contemporary commentator observed in this picture a ‘union of classic style and modern sentiment [which is] perfect’.
