Strudwick was a follower of Burne-Jones and Spencer Stanhope for both of whom he worked as an assistant. The figure types in this work are taken from Burne-Jones, as is the orchard canopy under which they sit; the landscape background owes more to Stanhope. Strudwick’s individuality emerges in the decorative elaboration of the surface with its minutely described detail. The artist sometimes laboured for years on a single canvas.
