It would have been difficult for the artist to have painted a more exact representation of the archetypes of man and woman in the Romantic Era. The painting shows five people at a wedding. Although weddings have been a popular subject throughout the history of art, it is during the Romantic period that a new dimension is given to the subject, bringing, for the first time, an aura of intimacy into the painting. In this case the artist has decided to represent the marital love that dominated the bourgeois ideal. There is debate over which the painter was, although for some time it has been attributed to José Gutiérrez de la Vega.
