A Young Woman Reading a Manuscript

AD Mid 18th Century

Chester Beatty Library

Chester Beatty Library

A young woman, using a tree as a chair, is reading from what appears to be a safina—a small, long and narrow manuscript, so-named because of its ‘boat-like’ shape. (Safina is Persian for ‘boat’.) Manuscripts of this type are thought to have been designed to fit in the pocket and were a popular format for anthologies of poems.
