Developed in Uruguay in 1939, the card game Canasta spread through South America during the 1940s. It came to the United States around 1949 and, like many other games throughout history, inspired an enthusiastic boom. A variant of rummy, classic Canasta allows for four players, in two teams, to play for points through a series of hands. An official "American" version plays with stricter rules than the classic version, but in either case the first team to score 5,000 points is the winner. The Canasta boom in the 1950s inspired widespread sales of Canasta accessories.
