Many fans of Japanese manga consider "Akira" by Katsuhiro Otomo to be a masterpiece of the genre. The story depicted in the graphic novel concerns events that take place in Neo-Tokyo, a city built near the ruins of the original Tokyo destroyed in a nuclear war that began in 1992. Nearly 40 years later, street gangs, secret government agents, and resistance groups clash in the postapocalypic world. Otomo originally serialized Akira in Young Magazine, running from 1982-1990. The series was repackaged into six volumes. Otomo produced a film based on his manga in 1988. The manufacture of action figures from the Akira saga accompained the US importation of the tale.
