In 1983, writer Michael Crichton met entomologists George O. and Robert Poinar. The scientists had begun to take DNA from insects trapped in prehistoric amber and had published an article on their work. Crichton filled-up a notebook from their conversation and discovered he had the premise for a thriller. Crichton published _Jurassic Park in 1990, which was based off his notes from his conversation with the Pionars and from Conan Doyle_s 1912 novel, _The Lost World.__ The book seemed detached yet convincing. Fans and critics continue to review _Jurassic Park__ and the subsequent movies. Some consider it a story of colonization and others discuss it in terms of gender studies.

What is it about dinosaurs that so enthrall children? Is it that dinosaurs are so big? Or that they are extinct? Maybe it is that many have been portrayed as such ferocious beings? Even if they are scary, they are safe: there is zero chance of one lurking in the closet or under the bed at night. Some specialists think it is the dinosaurs_ power and ferocity that attracts children. Youngsters appreciate the power they do not have. Other specialist speculate that young paleontologists recognize the fierceness and aggression of the beasts which they struggle with themselves. Or maybe kids like dinosaurs because a fantastic T-Rex, Apatosaurus, and Velociraptor so easily fit into their make-believe worlds.
