Star Wars collectors refer to the first production series of action figures released by Kenner toys as the vintage lines. The sale of these early figures were tied to the first three Star Wars movies that appeared in 1977 ("Star Wars," now called "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope"), "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980), and the "Return of the Jedi" (1983). So, Kenner sold the Vintage "Star Wars" line from 1978 to 1980; the Vintage "The Empire Strikes Back" line sold from 1980 to 1983; and action figures in the Vintage "Return of the Jedi" line sold from 1983 to 1984. As all Star Wars devotees know, George Lucas produced no more movies in the saga until the 1999 release of "The Phantom Menace," but the long draught hardly stopped Kenner from issuing additional series of action figures.
