The House of Wisdom was known by two names, according to its development stages. When it was a single hall during the time of Harun al-Rashid (763 - 809), it was named Khizanat al-Hikmah (Library of Wisdom), but later, as it grew into Bayt al-Hikmah (House of Wisdom), it housed a large library, which held a great collection of different subjects in many languages.
