Pieter van der Werff was the student of his brother Adriaen in Rotterdam. Pieter's close dependence on his brother's style and the fact that Adriaen often finished Pieter's paintings has created difficulties in distinguishing the works of the two artists. Pieter became Rotterdam Guild member in 1703.
The Expulsion of Adam and Eve appears to be a copy of a painting by Adriaen van der Werff although excluding the expelling angel. The Ponce painting may be yet a fifth version. Apparently this painting has been cut down at some time, and Eve's hair has been lengthened to cover Adam's genitalia.
