Alexander Wyant ventured north from his New York City studio to the Adirondacks to sketch on several occasions, beginning in the late 1860s. As seen in this painting, Wyant discovered a treasure trove of subject matter in the brilliant colors of the forest, the sparkling water of the many lakes and streams in the area, and the towering mountains that dominate the landscape. Along with a number of artists of his day, he found the Keene Valley area to be especially attractive, and by 1875 he acquired a summer studio in the small hamlet. From this vantage point he could view the Ausable River valley and the imposing peaks that surround it. Several of his works focused on the scenic wonders of the rugged wilderness he found there.
