A Baroque French painter from a family of artists from Langres, Tassel assimilated the classicist Italian, Flemish and Parisian traditions to create a recognisable style of his own. He painted several versions of the Adoration of the Magi, including one with an identical composition now exhibited in the Louvre, with slight variations of detail and colour. The somewhat disordered composition on the right of the picture, overburdened with figures and other items stands in contrast to the Holy Family on the left, depicted against the backdrop of an imposing ruin to highlight their central role. The colour and lighting of the Madonna is particularly notable. As in other paintings by Tassel, this is a languid adaptation of Italian models.
