The kestrel is a small, chestnut brown bird of prey, with yellow legs and a hooked bill of bluish colour.Kestrels can be seen on roadside verges hovering in the air or perching on telephone poles or high branches.
With their keen eyesight, sharp talons and strong beak, kestrels make expert hunters. They hover over their prey before diving onto them. Voles are the kestrel’s favourite prey, but they also eat wood mice, shrews, small birds, insects and earthworms.
