The Studebaker Proving Ground opened in 1926 eight miles west of South Bend. There Studebaker cars and trucks were tested under many conditionss for quality and reliability. The STUDEBAKER "sign" seen is actually over 8,000 pine trees spanning over half a mile to spell out the company name.
