Spandrel and arch fragments

Museo de Jaén

Museo de Jaén
Jaén, Spain

DJ/DA03708. Fragment of a monumental doorway from a palatial building. The fragment corresponds to a double horseshoe arch supported by a central column or pillar. The arches consisted of travertine masonry blocks cemented with gypsum and lined with decorated plaster on both sides. The decoration was based on a variety of intertwined vegetal motifs, some of which are painted red and crowned by an additional plant motif. Most of the central spandrel has also survived. The decoration of the spandrel is a simple lace pattern crowned by an inscribed frieze.
