With the growing Nazi persecution to Jews, her mother left for Palestine in 1938. The following year, Trudi and her father went to Belgium, where they ended up being arrested for entering without permission. After being released, they remained in the country for two years, until her father had to report to the police. He left his daughter a goodbye note: "Bleibe brav, dein veter" ("Continue being honorable, your father").
