Sitges, Barcelona, Spain

"The sculptor Pere Jou (Barcelona, 1891- Sitges, 1964) arrived in Sitges in 1915 when Miquel Utrillo commissioned the capitals and gargoyles of the Maricel architectural complex. For five years, the young sculptor displayed his brilliant talent in one of the most vibrant and virtuosity sculptural ensembles of Catalan sculpture of the 20th century.

Pere Jou was unanimously considered a virtuoso of direct carving, a testimony of courage, security and of imaginative audacity.

This sculpture depicts a semi-kneeling naked woman, with a bunch of malmsey grapes that closes her right hand to the face and the left hand helps to keep straight.

The presence of grapes is a tribute to Sitges and to malmsey. The sensuality of the nude body is added to that of the fruit and to reference to the town environment, so favourable to the enjoyment of life."
