Located on Observatory Hill in Riverview Park, Allegheny Observatory was constructed in a mixed Classical style, which includes Greek Ionic columns and Roman balustrades. Built in 1900, the observatory became the working place of John Brashear, one of America’s best-known lens makers. The observatory remains to this day a key part of the study of astronomy in the United States and is run by the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.
