"This panel is from Maluenda, in the province of Zaragoza, and it has been attributed to the studio belonging to Domingo Ram. It formed part of an altarpiece, possibly with panels from different places. This altarpiece depicts Saint Valerius and Saint Vincent on the side panels and the Nativity of Mary on the centre panel.
In this panel, Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, is lying on a canopied bed that is standing in the centre of the room. Saint Joaquim, the only male figure, has his hands together in prayer and is thanking Heaven for the birth of his daughter.
Pictorial altarpieces are valuable graphic documents that provide visual information about the period. In this case, the clothes worn by the women in the scene denote their social status. The painter has also reflected the women’s marital status by means of their headgear: married women covered their hair with wimples and the only single woman shows her hair, even though she decorates it with a bonnet and a ribbon."
