Frankfurt am Main, Germany

By the end of the 19th century, the American Bison had been hunted close to extinction. Before then, herds of several hundred thousand individuals roamed the prairies of North America and kept them from becoming overgrown with brush. A few small herds survived in the protected areas of Yellowstone National Park in the USA and Wood Buffalo Park in Canada. Today, bison are again found in the wild.
