The Historic New Orleans Collection
New Orleans, United States

An engraved map of North America from the Atlas Geographicus Maior (Nuremberg, 1759-81). The map is a new issue of an original map by Johann Baptist Homann between 1718 and 1724. It is tinted in red, green, and yellow. In the upper left is a vignette of Niagara Falls and in the lower right a cartouche featuring an Indian, a buffalo, and a pelican. Much of this map is derived from Guillaume De L'Isle's 1718 map of French Louisiana, with some changes made to the Florida peninsula, Mexico, and the Atlantic seaboard. Full title: Amplissimae Regionis Mississipi Seu Provinciae Ludovicianae â R.P. Ludovico Hennepin Francise Miss. in America Septentrionali.
