Yad Vashem

This photograph is part of an album documenting life and work in the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam during the German occupation. The work was commissioned by J. Brandon, the secretary of the Jewish Council, in 05/1941, and consisted of 116 photographs taken over a two month period. Most of the images show Jewish residents of the quarter at work in various relief agencies set up to help both those in the ghetto and inmates held in the Westerbork and Vught transit camps. Through their efforts, Jews held in those camps received mail from their relatives in the ghetto as well as personal possessions they had left behind after their deportation from the ghetto.
