An Intellectual And Philosopher

Coline Jenkins, Debra Kolsrud

At age 11, Elizabeth began to study Latin, Greek, science and mathematics with the boys at the Johnstown Academy for three years. Her hard work was rewarded when she won the Greek prize. Elizabeth wanted to attend Union College in Schenectady, New York, but she was denied admission because they didn’t accept women. No colleges in America allowed females. Instead, Elizabeth attended the Troy Female Seminary, lead by educator Emma Hart Willard, graduating in 1932.
