Amitabha Banerjee took inspiration from the Bengal School and painted realistic watercolour paintings of everyday life early in his career. He joined the Society of Contemporary Artists in 1971 and started experimenting with printmaking along with fellow members of the group such as Lalu Prasad Shaw and Suhas Roy. Bengali women, landscapes and nature were recurring themes in his works.
He received the AIFACS Award (1976), the Birla Academy of Art and Culture Award (1978) and the Lalit Kala National Award. He had several shows in India, America, Canada and Bangladesh. His works are displayed in the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and Calcutta's Birla Academy of Art and Culture.
