'An Uncertain Hour' is set in the roaring twenties, a period with many important artistic developments. During this period the play 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' (1921) by the Italian writer Luigi Pirandello was brought to stage. Three years later, Thomas Mann published his novel 'Der Zauberberg'. Within the field of film there are also some important developments, among which the exhibition ‘Film and Foto’ in Stuttgart (1929) was the most important one.

Martha Clarke’s six characters are placed in a desolate mountain area in 'An Uncertain Hour'. Their interrelatedness remains unclear. Everyone appears to be trapped in a state of calmness and control, after which outbursts of anger and violence follow.
