The Philadelphia Mummers Parade is a New Year's Day tradition. While the parade and festivities go back further, the first official city-authorized Mummers Parade was New Year's Day 1901 and is believed to be the longest continuously held folk parade in the United States. The parade is composed of performing groups or "clubs" in different categories: The Comic, The Fancy, The Wench Brigade, The String Band, and The Fancy Brigade. Performances are themed and include large, shiny, brightly-colored, feathered costumes and set pieces that can be moved along the parade route.
