Mid-18th century

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna
Bologna, Italy

Plaster cast from the original Hadrianic marble preserved in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. The cast, belonging to the group donated by Benedict XIV, is ascribable to the mid-eighteenth century. In the Gallery of Statues there are two other depictions of Antinous, both mentioned together with the example of the capital in the inventory of 1766. One is the Antinoo al Bagno, also included in the papal gift; the other is the Antinoo del Belvedere, purchased by Marsili in 1713. The three specimens are mentioned in the inventory of 1803 and 1811.
