One of the safest ways to approach an enemy fortress was to dig trenches right up to the fortress walls. The trenches were dug in zig-zag lines to protect from enemy fire. At different intervals artillery pieces were placed to blast the walls. This image was published in Adam Freitag's book on how to defend and attack fortresses.
