The carbon rod or arc lamp was the first electric lamp in which the flow of current between two carbon rods created an arc of light. The burning time of the arc discharge is approximately eight hours for carbon rods with a length of 30 cm. There is a special mechanism in the lamp to maintain the proper separation distance between the two carbon rods while it is lit.
