163 Lavender Street before restoration.

The shophouse was owned by prominent businessman and philanthropist Lee Kong Chian, who was a strong supporter of Sun Yet Sen’s Nationalist cause. This could have been the reason for the depiction of soldiers carrying the Chinese Nationalist flag on the pediment.
