From early on, telegrams, which were still quite expensive, were used to make travel arrangements. Telegrams made it possible to announce changes to travel plans or arrival times whilst en route—and the message would arrive before you reached your destination! This would have been impossible to achieve using snail mail. This telegram was used to order 2 extra mail horses from Geißlingen at the post office in Ulm on November 26, 1851. This enabled the traveler to change horses immediately and continue his journey without delay.
