Great argus

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Including its long tail feathers, a male Argus Pheasant can reach a total length of two meters. During the mating season, he clears a lek site in the rainforest understory where he displays for the females and presents them with the hundreds of eye spots on his wing coverts and tail feathers. The female Argus Pheasant is lacking the conspicuous eye spots and the long tail feathers. This bird is very shy and avoids danger by quickly running away.
