This piece is a fine arm type of reliquary, containing a relic of Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople. The body of the piece, in gilt copper, is decorated with vegetal spirals in bas-relief of Mannerist style. The relic is exhibited inside an oval glass display. Eight inset stones of different colours decorate the surface of the arm. It is topped with an open hand of great perfection and impressive realism.

  • Biography of the saint’s relic: St. John Chrysostom is one of the Doctors of the Greek Chruch. He was born in 344 in Antioch. In 398 he was consecrated Patriarch of Constantinople and a short while later he was deposed and exiled due to intrigues with the Empress Eudoxia. He died in exile in 407. He was named “Chrysostom” (golden-mouthed) due to his eloquence.
