Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

This arm ring is decorated at each end with two heads – probably of serpents − facing each other. Decorations of this kind in ‘animal style’ are known primarily from Scandinavia. Numerous Danes and Swedes (‘Vikings’) came to the region of the Netherlands from the 8th century onwards, initially as merchants and later as plunderers.
