Wristlets were worn to protect the wrists from the cold or heat. Those used in winter were made of silk or cotton cloth that was layered, padded, or quilted for keeping warmth. In summer, wristlets made of wisteria, bamboo, or horsehair were worn around the arms to prevent sweat from lingering and to facilitate ventilation.
