The sculptural character of grand furnishing of the Baroque period in Italy is visible in this armchair, although in a somewhat simpler version in comparison with the rich and carved decoration of the leading north Italian craftsman of the time, Andrea Brustolono. The playfulness and intricacy was achieved by the addition of volutes in the structure of the armrests, the front legs and their joints. On the back, a piece of embroidery has been appliquéd – a medallion with a female figure done in 'petit point'. With a great deal of probability, we can assume that the original upholstery, as on similar pieces, was of gobelin cloth, later replaced by velvet.
