Here is brass casing that contained the first shell fired by American troops in World War I on October 23, 1917. The First Division of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France gave the brass casing to President Wilson as a souvenir. He kept it on the mantle in his bedroom as a reminder of the Great War.
