Portrair of the pianist and composer Arthur Napoleão (1834-1925), also known for his bussines of musical instruments and editing sheet music.

Napoleão was born in Porto. A prodigy, travelled through Europe and America from his early years, moving to Brasil (Rio de Janeiro) in 1866, where he lived most of his life.

Artur Napoleão is portraited with a score in his hand, with the title "La Chasse", possibly one of his compositions. Due to the wear of the painting its not possible to read the name of the composer on the score, furthermore the name "La Chasse" for piano is a common name for musical compositions of his time.

In the back, at the left on the piano music stand there is a score made by Napoleão, probably "Doze Estudos Artísticos".
