This manuscript was added to the Generali’s Biblioteca Centrale in 1956, following a resolution passed on June 12 of that year by the Banco Vitalicio in Madrid, to mark 125 years since Generali’s founding. The choice of gift was no coincidence. It was chosen for its symbolic importance, as nothing represented the spirit and identity of Spain like Seneca. The crest on the first page links the manuscript to the de Luna family of Aragon, a longstanding Spanish noble family whose name derives from their rule over the city of Luna, in the province of Zaragoza. Among the members of the family, which were split into several branches, there was the antipope Benedict XIII, whose emblem still adorns the entrance to his castle overlooking the coast at Peñíscola. It should also be noted that Seneca’s manuscript also has a connection to Game of Thrones, because Peñíscola was the home of Benedict XIII before it became famous as the set of Meereen.
