Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo
Linares (Jaén), Spain

Representation of the goddess Astarte belonging to a thymiaterium from the necropolis of Torrubia in Castulo maybe made in a phoenician workshop from South Iberian Peninsula. This figure amongst two other similar caryatids (a kind of column with feminine shape), which supported the bowl in which incense was burned down at ritual ceremonies.

Apart from this element several fragments of the thymiaterium’s molten bronze were preserved, like the bowl, a deer and a similar caryatid.

The arms are bent at the waist to hold a papyrus flower, and the head is topped with a Hathor hairstyle on which a flower emerges.
