Yang Qiuren, formerly known as Yang Gongbai and Yang Jianqiu, was born in Guilin, Guangxi province. He passed the entrance exam and entered the Shanghai Fine Art School in 1928 and then transferred, in 1930, to Shanghai Arts School where he studied oil painting under the tutelage of Mr. Chen Baoyi. He joined the Storm Soceity in 1932. In 1939, he was engaged in the cultural activities during the Anti-Japanese National Salvation Movement. In the 1940s, he worked successively as a professor at Guilin Fine Arts College, Guangdong Province Fine Arts School, and Guangzhou Municipal College of Fine Arts. From the 1950s to the 1980s, he served as the dean of Studies and professor of the Department of Fine Arts at South China institute of Literature and Art, the vice-president and professor at Central South College of Fine Arts, and the vice-president and professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He was also elected as a member of the first and second sessions of the National People’s Congress in Guangdong province.
