Due to the heavy and dangerous work, lacklustre safety at work and a lack of correct treatment methods, many miners suffered from chronic ailments or were injured in accidents. The "Saarknappschaftsverein" was founded in June 1926, which provided health insurance and pension schemes for the Saarlandic miners.
