Yu Kwonyeol(1968- ) is one of the leading artists of Korean print who garnered attention through his unique way of using the techniques of etching and aquatint. The Atlantic sea is the subject of Yu’s consistent quest to resuscitate Utopia, which has been deprived of its concreteness. The vestiges of meta-civilizations are gathered and appropriated into non-objective, surrealistic compositions. This series of works implies that the artist identifies himself with Atlantis, which is an imaginary entity that Yu adopts as the pronoun for the boundless potential of man as he swims through his own sea of mentality.
