Auditorium

ARM Architecture2014

Shrine of Remembrance

Shrine of Remembrance
Melbourne, Australia

Designed by ARM Architecture, the auditorium is a purpose-built 137-seat theatrette where the Shrine hosts public programs and events including talks, movie screenings, book launches, presentations, and an introductory AV for student groups.

Architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall chose the symbolism of peace and healing for the walls and ceiling. The ceiling motifs are doves seen from below with their wings outstretched in flight. The acoustic wall cladding features the crane symbol which has a long history as a symbol of peace in Celtic and Asian culture. They are seen as protectors and diving messengers.

The programs and talks held in the auditorium are aimed at helping visitors develop an understanding of the unique purpose of the Shrine and to reflect on the wars, conflicts and peacekeeping efforts in Victoria’s history.
