Ergin İnan was born in Malatya in 1943. He studied painting at Istanbul State College of Applied Fine Arts between 1964-68. In 1969 he attended the Salzburg Summer Academy, where he studied under Vedova. In 1970 he was awarded a scholarship by Federal Germany's Academic Exchange Programme (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst/ DAAD) and studied under Max Zimmermann at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts until 1973. He went on to become a lecturer in painting at the State College of Applied Fine Arts in 1975. In 1978-79 he worked at the Munich and Berlin academies of fine arts, and in 1983-84 and 1985 again worked at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. He was awarded first prizes at the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture Open-air Exhibition in 1980 and the International Asian-European Art Biennale in 1983, and won the Sedat Simavi Foundation Visual Arts Prize in 1983. In 1987 he was selected as Artist of the Year in the field of painting by Ankara Art Institute and in 1993 was awarded a bronze medal at the Osaka Triennial.
